UPDATE: Officer Involved Shooting – Vassar and Phoenix
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The suspect involved in an officer involved shooting which occurred Monday, July 31, 2017 is Robert Savelli, 43.
Just before 8 p.m. an Albuquerque Police Officer attempted to pull over a moped style scooter that did not have a license plate. The driver of the scooter refused to comply with the officer’s commands. The officer then confronted the offender. A threat was presented to the officer and shots were fired.
Witness say Robert Savelli was in possession of a firearm which was located on scene.
He was transported to the hospital where he died. The officer was not injured.
Savelli had an active warrant for charges of tampering with evidence, trafficking and possession of a controlled substance and being a felon in possession of a firearm. These warrants were issued in March of this year.
The officer did have lapel video which captured the event. Surveillance video, which also captured the event, was recovered as well. Videos will be released after any and all witnesses have been interviewed.
The officer has been with the Albuquerque Police Department for nine years. His name will be released after he is interviewed. He is currently on standard, paid administrative leave.
We would like to thank the Multijurisdictional Task Force, which includes the New Mexico State Police, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department, Rio Rancho Police Department and The District Attorney’s Office for their assistance with this investigation. Members of the Civilian Police Oversight Agency were also on scene.
The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms is also assisting with this investigation and we would like to thank them for their partnership.
