Homicide Unit investigating July 4 shooting after victim dies

ALBUQUERQUE – APD’s Homicide Unit took over an investigation of a July 4 shooting after the victim died over the weekend as a result of his wounds.

Officers responded shortly before 5 p.m. on July 4, 2023, to a report of a carjacking in the parking lot of a hotel at 6718 Central Ave., S.E. Officers learned the victim of the carjacking had been shot.

The victim, later identified as Alfonso Aguilar, 61, was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound. On July 8, APD detectives were informed that Aguilar died as a result of his wound.

Homicide detectives took over the investigation that was started by APD’s Gun Violence Reduction Unit. The investigation is on-going.
