Domestic Violence Call Ends with Officer Shot and Suspect in Custody
Maximilano Villegas, 38, was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center early this morning for felony charges False Imprisonment, Child Abuse, Aggravated Battery on a Police Officer and misdemeanor domestic violence charges.
On 07/13/2017 at approximately 11:14 p.m., the Albuquerque Police Department received a call from a female advising she was in a physical domestic dispute with her boyfriend, Maximilano Villegas, and needed police assistance. Officers quickly arrived to the 3900 block of General Bradley St NE. As they arrived, the female caller was able to exit the residence with 2 of her children but was unable to take a 3rd child who was still in the residence with Villegas. Officers attempted to make contact with both Villegas and the child however they were not getting a response from either. Officers established a perimeter and called for additional resources for assistance. A short time later Villegas exited the garage armed with a rifle and with the 3rd child. The child was able to come out to officers and taken to safety however Villegas disregarded police commands and went back inside the residence still armed with the rifle. Due to Villegas being armed and refusing to exit the residence, the call was deemed a SWAT call out. SWAT and the Crisis Negotiation Team arrived and made many attempts to speak to Villegas and advised him exit peacefully. At one point Villegas made the decision to fire shots from inside the residence not only risking the lives of officers but also risking the lives of everyone in the neighborhood. Unfortunately one of the shots hit an officer posted at a perimeter post in the shoulder. The officer is a veteran officer of the department and was transported to a local hospital and is expected to be okay. Eventually just after 3 a.m. Villegas was taken into custody without further incident.
