APD unveils remodeled Family Advocacy Center lobby
ALBUQUERQUE –The Albuquerque Police Department unveiled the newly remodeled lobby of the Family Advocacy Center, to create a safe haven for victims and survivors of crime. Each day dozens of individuals walk through the doors of the FAC to speak with investigators regarding a case or to receive resources through the many service providers inside the facility.
The renovation also opens up space for providers and advocates as several detectives move to the newly remodeled area of the APD Main headquarters.
The renovation was made possible thanks to a nearly $70,000 grant from the Crime Victims Reparation Commission. From fresh paint, updated furniture, monitors, a kiosk check-in, to a coffee and snack bar and a special kids corner, the department tried to incorporate everything someone may need when visiting the space.
“The staff and partners at the Family Advocacy Center help our community during their darkest days,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Victims and their families deserve this welcoming space where they can feel safe and supported as they navigate tough times.”
Thanks to a donation from the Parks and Rec department, Dan Humbles, the City’s Horticulturist, handpicked plants with healing elements to fill the space. Dan has a personal connection to the FAC as he worked with investigators and APD’s Victims Assistance Unit several years ago after losing his sister to homicide. A plaque in her honor was also hung on the wall as the plants were donated in her memory.
“Within the Family Advocacy Center, we investigate some of the worst crimes and individual can endure, and the impact of crime can go well beyond just the person who was victimized,” said Chief Harold Medina. “Whether a survivor walks through the door of the FAC or a family who lost someone to homicide sits in this room, we want them to feel that we are here for them, and they are safe and will receive the services and care they need.”
