APD releases update to officer-involved shooting
ALBUQUERQUE – APD released the identity of the man who shot a police officer and was killed by gunfire returned by police on Thursday in Northeast Albuquerque.
Emmanuel Galaviz Campos, 20, was wanted on two warrants, including a warrant out of Santa Fe for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and shooting at or from a motor vehicle. APD detectives were also searching for Galaviz Campos in connection with a homicide investigation. He was considered a person of interest in that investigation.
As SWAT officers attempted to apprehend Galaviz Campos on his warrants, he fired a gun, striking an APD officer in the arm. Officers returned fire, striking Galaviz Campos and killing him.
The officer who was injured was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released last night.
Over the next several months, APD will continue to investigate and analyze this incident. Detectives will continue interviewing any new witnesses that come forward and complete any forensic tests. After the investigation is complete, APD’s Force Review Board will forward the findings to the Superintendent of Police Reform to determine if this incident met the high standards of the Albuquerque Police Department. The Multi-Agency Task Force will forward its case to the District Attorney’s Office to make any determination of criminal charges.
