The Albuquerque Police Department is launching a new program called “Cop on the Corner” to help build relationships with the communities where officers patrol.

The program will give people the opportunity to attend police field briefings where they can interact with the officers assigned to their neighborhoods. APD has six Area Commands covering the entire city. Officers often start their shifts with field briefings in targeted neighborhoods, business centers and parks to get updates on crime in the area.

“We are committed to community engagement and outreach to the citizens we serve,” said Chief Harold Medina. “This new effort provides a voice to people living in our city and a direct access to officers where they can address issues and concerns.”

In addition to hearing from the public at Cop on the Corner events, officers will gather information about crimes and specific issues related to the area where the briefings are being held. As these briefings will serve as a way to exchange information, it is also an opportunity for officers to provide the public with crime prevention tips and tools.

“This initiative is a stepping stone to continue building strong relationships between our police department and the residents of Albuquerque,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Our community members are invited to have a direct connection with the officers who fight crime in their neighborhoods, and to discuss their concerns and ideas as we face these challenges head on.”
