APD Issues Hundreds of Citations During Red Light Runner Operations

ALBUQUERQUE – The Albuquerque Police Department concluded a two-week operation which resulted in hundreds of citations for drivers who ran red lights and stop signs throughout the city.
From April 15 through the 28, APD’s Traffic Unit and the Field Services Bureau, conducted targeted operations enforcing red light violations due to an increase in crashes.
In total, 939 citations were issued and seven arrests were made. Of the 939 citations, 442 were for red light and stop sign violations.
Drivers were issued one of the following citations during the operations:
- Failure to Obey Traffic Control Devices/Failure to Obey Signs
- Traffic-Control Signal-Legend/Failure to Obey Signal
- Failure to yield right-of-way to Stop sign
“The numbers clearly show we have an issue with driver disregard for traffic control measures put in place to keep our roadways safe,” said Chief Harold Medina. “We will continue to conduct targeted enforcement for different traffic violations in order to change driver behavior.”
The operations were conducted at the below list of 20 intersections with the highest crashes due to red light violations ranked in order of incident:
- Menaul Blvd/Frontage Road North and South
- 2nd Street/Frontage West and East
- Coors/Montano Road N.W.
- Osuna/San Mateo at Frontage Roads North and South
- Avenida Cesar Chavez/Interstate 25
- San Mateo/Montgomery N.E.
- All intersection Frontage Roads under Interstate 25
- Lead Ave./Oak and Locust S.E.
- Coal Ave./Oak and Locust S.E.
- Martin Luther King Jr./Oak and Locust S.E.
- Juan Tabo/Interstate 40 N.E.
- Wyoming/Central S.E.
- Louisiana/Interstate 40 N.E.
- 2nd Street/Mountain Road N.W.
- Tramway/Interstate 40 N.E.
- Coors/Dellayne N.W.
- San Mateo/Lomas N.E.
- Montano/Culture N.E.
- Montano/Pan American Freeway N.E.
- San Mateo/Interstate 40 N.E.
