Monday, June 12, 2023
ALBUQUERQUE – APD’s Motors Unit is investigating a serious-injury crash involving a motorcycle and an ATV in Southwest Albuquerque overnight.
Officers in the Southwest Area Command responded to the crash shortly before 10 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at 10601 Benavides S.W. The driver of the ATV was transported to a local hospital to be treated for severe head trauma. The ATV driver was also transported to be treated for a broken leg and severe facial damage.
The Motors Unit was called to conduct an investigation.
Investigators determined that a black 2006 Honda motorcycle was traveling southwest on Benavides Rd. At the same time a Yellow Honda F450 ATV appeared to be doing doughnuts and other exhibition style driving in the intersection of Del Rey and Benavides. The two vehicles crashed into each other and the ATV flipped up onto the curb in front of 10601 Benavides SW.
Neither the driver of the ATV, the motorcycle driver nor motorcycle passenger had helmets or protective gear. It does appear that speed and other improper driving behaviors were the cause of the crash. This investigation is ongoing.
The ATV driver will be charged with operating an Off Highway Vehicle on a city roadway in addition to any other identified violation. Charges are pending at this time.
