11/12/2021

ALBUQUERQUE – On November 12, 2021 at approximately 1:00 a.m. the Motors Unit was called out to a serious injury crash located at Coors Blvd NW and the on-ramp to I-40 EB. During our investigation it was determined that an Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) vehicle was heading to an emergency call for service utilizing its lights and sirens as it traveled southbound on Coors preparing to head eastbound on I-40.

At the same time, a pedestrian pushing a shopping cart began crossing the lanes of traffic across the on ramp. The AFR vehicle struck the pedestrian. The pedestrian received significant injuries as a result of the accident. The pedestrian was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital where he later succumb to his injuries. AFR Personnel remained on scene and rendered aid to the pedestrian.

This investigation is ongoing. At this time it does not appear that alcohol or speed were a factor for the crash. It does appear to be pedestrian error at this time. Currently there are no charges pending.
