ALBUQUERQUE – APD officers arrested Dylan Lujan today after he fled a traffic stop in a stolen truck and struck a pedestrian walking in a crosswalk on Central Ave. and San Pablo.

Officers were not pursuing Lujan when he struck the woman at 2:16 p.m., critically injuring her. Lujan, 31, fled the scene, driving eastbound on Central Ave. at a high rate of speed.

Officers later located the vehicle near Eubank Blvd. and I-40. With the assistance of the APD Horse Mounted Unit, Southeast officers attempted a traffic stop, however the subjects fled at a high rate of speed. Due to the severity of the crime that had occurred and the disregard for life displayed by Lujan, a sergeant authorized the pursuit and tire deflation devices to quickly and safely stop the offender.

After a brief pursuit, Lujan drove down into the Embudo Arroyo and stopped in the drainage tunnel. With assistance from officers in the Foothills Area Command and APD K9 units, the suspect and his girlfriend were safely taken into custody hiding in a drainage pipe.

APD’s Fatal Crash team was also called out to investigate the crash that injured the female pedestrian.

Through the investigation it was discovered that a female pedestrian was crossing south in the marked crosswalk on Central Ave. near San Pablo. The crosswalk was equipped with full-access control lights that were engaged red, indicating that the pedestrian had the right-of-way. Two vehicles were seen stopped at the crosswalk lights. A white single cab vehicle was then seen traveling at a high rate of speed in the number three eastbound lane. The vehicle struck the pedestrian and continued east on Central.

Officers later arrived on-scene and discovered the injured woman. She was transported in critical condition to a local hospital.

Lujan was arrested and charged with Great Bodily Harm by Vehicle, Receiving Transferring a Stolen Vehicle, Aggravated Fleeing, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident (GBH).
