Shelter Pets Need You!
The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department (AWD) is looking for foster parents to provide temporary homes for special-needs pets to help them live a long life. In 2023, AWD admitted into the shelter 3,257 kittens and 2,136 puppies. The 2024 kitten season is here and we are excepting even more.
Pets who need fostering include:
- Helping animals recover from illness or injury
- Caring for new animal mothers and their litters
- Taking care of newborn baby puppies and kittens
- Providing a quality of life for elderly animals who need extra care.
- Bottle feeding animals without mothers.
- Socializing dogs and cats who are learning good behaviors for their forever homes.
Once a month Animal Welfare Department Foster program offers introduction classes about the program and the care of bottle-baby kittens and puppies. When you foster with AWD, you are provided with pet food and supplies. All you have to do is provide a loving home.
Fostering is a rewarding commitment. Being part of AWD’s foster parent program, you will play an important life-saving role in the journey of a homeless pet to their new family.
The length of time a pet spends with a foster parent depends on the requirements of the pet. This can be an intense short-term commitment, but also a very rewarding one.

Thank you for being a hero to all the homeless pets at Animal Welfare Department shelters.
