Open Space Explorer Camp Expanding to Saturdays in August

Opportunities for kids to explore nature and the great outdoors

The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department is expanding the Open Space Explorer Camp to Saturdays in August to provide more opportunities for Albuquerque kids to explore nature and the great outdoors. The one-day camps will be led by Open Space educators who will provide environmental education activities and fun crafting opportunities.

“With more than 29,000 acres of beautiful Open Space in and around Albuquerque, the Open Space Explorer Camp is a perfect way for kids to explore our City’s natural wonders,” stated Colleen Langan-McRoberts, Open Space Superintendent. “These day camps are designed to help inspire the next generation of conservationists to protect the natural resources that help make our city so great.”

Open Space educators at the Open Space Visitor Center will provide guided instructional and recreational activities each Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Kids will take guided tours through the Bosque, gain an understanding of how nature influences local artists, and explore the Visitor Center’s gardens filled with native vegetation. They will take part in crafts, games, activities and more throughout the month. The Explorer Camp is intended to help Albuquerque’s kids gain a better understanding of the environment and our City’s natural surroundings.

All camp events take place outdoors at the Open Space Visitor Center, located at 6500 Coors Blvd NW. Kids are encouraged to bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and a snack and/or lunch. All camps will be observing COVID-safe practices, including limited group sizes, social distancing, and face coverings are required.

Registration is open to kids ages 6 to 10 years old and is $10.00 per participant. Registration is required due to limited group size. Register online at play.cabq.gov. To accommodate as many kids as possible, participants may only register for one week. Please call (505) 897-8831 or visit www.cabq.gov/openspace for more information.
