Ladera is ‘Lit’

Community celebrates first lighted driving range on Westside.
April 11, 2025

The City’s newest night driving range is now open at Ladera Golf Course—the first lighted driving range on the Westside. City officials and community members celebrated the grand opening last night by turning on the lights and testing out their swings.

“It really means something important,” said Santana Parraz, a 10-year-old golfer who took the first swing. “It gets really hot during the day and nice at night, so it’s nice to now have these lights.”

All of the new lights are energy-efficient LEDs and were designed to minimize effects on adjacent areas and the night sky. This new investment comes as play at Ladera is steadily growing. In 2024, Ladera saw 87,675 rounds played, up from 75,179 in 2023.

“This new feature is yet another way we’re breaking through and creating more amenities to take Albuquerque to the next level,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “The lights add to the attractiveness and atmosphere of Ladera, and the Westside community is excited for more family-friendly evening activities as we move into warmer weather.”

“Extend your practice time in the evening, then hit the perfect shot on the course the next day,” said Parks and Recreation Department Director Dave Simon. “At Ladera, we’re shining a light on your swing – literally!”

The night driving range will allow for play during the cooler evening hours of the summer months. By extending the hours of operation, it also offers players more flexibility in their schedules. Ladera’s lighted driving range will be open April through October.

Since 2020, the City has invested $1.8 million in improvements to Ladera Golf Course. Projects have included increasing water conservation measures, improving the clubhouse patio, a new tee line at the driving range, and other facility maintenance fixes. In October 2024, the City opened an expansion of the cantina.

“Quality of life and fun things to do are synonymous,” said NM State Senator Moe Maestas. “Ladera’s new night time driving range is an awesome addition to our City.”

The total cost of this project was $334,390. Funding came from the City’s 2023 G.O. Bond and a state capital outlay grant allocated by Senator Moe Maestas.

This is the City’s third lighted driving range; the others are located at Puerto del Sol Golf Course and the Balloon Fiesta Park.
