Come Out and Play at Tennis & Pickleball “Play Days”
Tennis and pickleball players have newly resurfaced courts, and the City’s encouraging the public to get out and get active. The new courts at Lauren C. Bolles Park and Jerry Cline Tennis Center are open for play, and Parks and Recreation Department is hosting community celebrations and “Play Days” on Friday, December 20 and Saturday, December 21. Instructors will be out to help teach folks how to play.
“Playing tennis and pickleball is a great way for families to get out, get active, and take advantage of these sunny winter days we’re getting,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Top notch amenities and community-focused engagement are just a couple of the reasons Albuquerque parks are ranked some of the highest in the nation.”
“Fresh courts at LC Bolles Park and Jerry Cline Tennis Center are an ‘ace’ for our community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Dave Simon. “High quality facilities for tennis and pickleball, and play days like these, are great for players of all ages and help make Albuquerque the best place to live for families.”
At Lauren C. Bolles Park, four tennis courts were resurfaced and “dual play” striped for tennis and pickleball. Representative Debra Sariñana fully funded this project ($180,000). The courts were last resurfaced in 2004. At Jerry Cline Tennis Center, PRD’s busiest tennis facility, eight of the 18 courts have been resurfaced so far. Resurfacing of another 5 courts, along with installation of new LED light fixtures on all 13 lighted courts, is also scheduled for 2025. Jerry Cline’s courts were last resurfaced in 2011.
“I’m proud to support these projects, which support healthy activity and community wellness,” said Representative Debbie Sariñana. “These investments improve neighborhoods and benefit the entire City.”
Jerry Cline court resurfacing and the moving of light poles on two courts for safety was funded with contributions from Rep. Debbie Sariñana, Rep. Marian Matthews, Rep. Elizabeth Thomson, Rep. Gail Chasey, and former Rep. Christine Trujillo. The new LED light retrofits will be funded with a combination of state capital outlay and City Funds (GO Bond 3% for energy conservation funds).
