International District Library Park Project
Updates on the development, planning, design and construction of the International District Library Park. A masterplan for the International District Library Park was originally created in 2018 and derived from written community surveys during a Town Hall held on March 11, 2018. The International District Library Park is a vibrant place where people feel welcome and participate in a variety of activities that enrich their daily lives. The International District Library Masterplan celebrates the diversity of the International District as the site design is open and flexible for diverse users and events and incorporates storytelling, art, stormwater infrastructure, shade, lighting, landscape, and quality site amenities. The International District Library Park has three main components:
- A library
- A story plaza
- The upcoming International District Library Park.
The International District Library Park is located in the heart of the International District and is part of the Historic Route 66 Corridor. The site is on the north side of Central Avenue between San Pablo and Charleston streets, where the Caravan East nightclub was formerly located. The International District is known as one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Albuquerque and New Mexico with a long history of people identifying new opportunities. It has a diverse religious and ethnic background and residents of the International District were clear in their desire for this project to embrace the vibrancy and diversity of their community.
As of October 2024, the schematic design for the International District Library Park was updated and refined while still maintaining the desirable park features obtained from community surveys in 2018. The design was presented to residents of the La Mesa Community Improvement Association and the Trumbull Village Association at their November 12th meeting at Mesa Verde Community Center. At that meeting, comments from the community were encouraged and a project planning and status web site was set up to gain further public comment on the design of the park. The City of Albuquerque now looks forward to the public visiting this website and providing comments and questions on the design of the park and in order to allow sufficient time for public review and comment, a deadline of January 4, 2025 has been established. For those who prefer to review the design in person, several boards illustrating the design are available for review at the International District Library. While visiting the Library to review the park design, please pick up a design survey available at the circulation desk and write down your comments and questions and place it in the drop box near the desk. We want to hear from you!
