Clinic to Provide Resources for Eviction Prevention
The City of Albuquerque is offering its wealth of resources to individuals facing eviction so they can stay in their homes. The City’s third Eviction Prevention Legal Clinic will be held on Wednesday, May 25th from 12:30pm to 3:30pm and is FREE to the community. This event will have attorneys on site offering legal advice to individuals facing eviction. Registration is required.
The Eviction Prevention Clinic will also offer application assistance for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP). ERAP is available to all individuals regardless of citizenship status. Community partners offering resources at the legal clinic include the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center, New Mexico Legal Aid, New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness, and El Centro De Igualdad y Derechos.
Gabrielle Johnson, an attorney with the Law Offices of Shaharazad Booth, has previously volunteered at the eviction clinics. Johnson shared, “It is great the City is offering these clinics to people from different walks of life. Many times, it is people who have fallen on hard times or who simply do not know what their rights are as a tenant.” She continued, “Landlord/Tenant laws can be confusing, that’s where I come in. I make the information that is out there more digestible and connect the clients with the information and resources they need. I encourage people to continue to be self-advocates, actively seek out information about your rights as a tenant.”
The deadline to register is Sunday, May 8th. For registration, please visit cabq.gov/evictionclinic or call (505)768-4255 during screening hours Monday – Friday between 9:00am – 3:00pm. This event will be held at El Centro De Igualdad y Derechos located at 714 4th Street Southwest, Albuquerque, NM.
Attorneys and community organizations who are interested in volunteering at future clinics may contact Pro Bono Clinic Coordinator, Yajayra Gonzalez at (505)738-5794 or [email protected].
