City Leaders Discuss Potential of Guaranteed Income
ALBUQUERQUE – On Tuesday, November 9, 2024, Mayor Tim Keller and the City of Albuquerque’s Office of Equity and Inclusion hosted a screening of the documentary “It’s Basic”, a film about guaranteed income, at the KiMo Theater. The movie screening was free and open to all community members. The afternoon was kicked off with opening remarks by Mayor Tim Keller and OEI’s Director, Sonya Lara.
“Unfortunately, it’s not always a level playing field for folks trying to access things like housing, education, food and healthcare,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “This program shows that when families have what they need to succeed, they are free to create economic stability for themselves with dignity.”
Following the film screening there was a panel discussion about guaranteed income with City and community leaders including, City Councilor Nichole Rogers; Dean of the UNM School of Law, Alfred D. Mathewson; NM House Representative Janelle Anyanonu; NM House Representative Cristina Parajón, and Partnership for Community Action’s Deputy Director, Teresa Madrid . They discussed how guaranteed income could be a policy solution and how it has been implemented in pilot programs in cities throughout the country.
“Guaranteed income programs increase opportunities, improve resilience, and give people the flexibility to decide what’s best for their families,” said OEI Director, Sonya Lara. “That is why the idea has spread to over 27 states, with 150 guaranteed income pilots happening across the country.”
“It’s Basic,” a feature-length documentary, looks at several pilot programs launched in different cities across the US that test the effects of giving everyday people an extra $500 to $1,000 monthly, with no strings attached. The film explores the power of cash, the importance of dignity, and the ongoing work of providing an income floor through the eyes of guaranteed income recipients who have witnessed firsthand the life-altering effects of financial stability.
