About GAATC

The Greater Albuquerque Active Transportation Committee (GAATC), established by Part 2-6-15 (revised in June 2021) of the City's Code of Ordinances, advises the City on the needs of people who walk, bike, use mobility devices, use other people-powered transportation options, and use public transit ("active transportation users") in our community. GAATC was known as the Greater Albuquerque Bicycling Advisory Committee (GABAC) from 1994 to 2021, focusing on bicyclists and bicycling facilities. In 2021, through O-21-63, City Council, working with staff and committee members, amended the scope to include all active transportation users to address a wider array of transportation challenges and opportunities in the City of Albuquerque.

Board Duties: GAATC members serve in an advisory role. GAATC advises on plans, projects, and programs in the greater Albuquerque area for bikeways, sidewalks, street crossings, and complete streets to support equity, safety, and accessibility for all. GAATC as a committee of advisors:

  • offers expertise, insights, and recommendations to help individuals or organizations make informed decisions;
  • strive to be objective and impartial, offering advice based on facts, data, and best practices;
  • may present different options or weigh the pros and cons of a plan or project, but ultimately, the decision-making authority rests with the individual or organization that contacted GAATC for their advice;
  • may volunteer to serve on plan/project working groups.

Membership: Members are appointed by the Mayor, with advice and consent from the City Council. The committee comprises nine (9) members representing different geographic areas and user groups in and around Albuquerque.

  • One member to represent active transportation users north of I-40 and east of I-25.
  • One member to represent active transportation users south of I-40 and east of I-25.
  • One member to represent active transportation users north of I-40 and west of I-25.
