City Encourages Community to “Bike to… Wherever”
May 17, 2021
The City of Albuquerque’s Department of Municipal Development (DMD) is announcing May 21st, 2021 as Bike to Wherever Day. Bike to Wherever Day is a local adaptation of Bike to Work Day that recognizes that bicycling has changed significantly for many since the pandemic. Rather than focusing on biking to work, DMD and the City of Albuquerque encourage community members to Bike to…Wherever!
Join the City of Albuquerque, Mid-Region Council of Governments, Sandia National Labs, BikeABQ, Canteen Brewing and others by committing to ride and participate in socially distanced activities, including a photo contest, team biking competition, a biking survey and more.
Bike to Wherever Day isn’t just focused on commuting; we encourage all Albuquerque residents to ride anywhere that makes the most sense to them. That could be to work, school, the grocery store, for a much-needed social visit, or just to get some fresh air and exercise. Biking is a great way to stay healthy and help the environment.
“The last year has taught us so much about the importance of getting outside for our overall wellness,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Although this event has been primarily focused on biking to work in the past, times are different, and we’re encouraging folks to just hop on your bike or on the bus to get outside to enjoy our beautiful city.”

Biking pairs extremely well with public transportation and together they allow riders to access more locations. This year the City of Albuquerque ABQRide is offering free transit fares to anyone with a bike on May 21, 2021 for Bike to Wherever Day.
“We are always looking for ways to encourage our community members to get out of their cars,” said ABQ Ride Transit Director Danny Holcomb. “This year on May 21, ride your bike to your closest bus stop, ride for free and get some fresh air.”
Friday, May 21, 2021 will also serve as a call to action to create safer streets across Albuquerque in support of the City of Albuquerque Vision Zero 2040 Action Plan.
