How to use a PHB or HAWK Signal

Information about the Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (PHBs) or High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signals in Albuquerque.

The City’s first PHB signal was installed at Alvarado Dr. and Lomas Blvd. as part of the 50 Mile Activity Loop. It will make crossing the street safer for people walking and biking. The PHB signal differs from other pedestrian signals because it requires drivers to stop and the signal acts as a stop light when lit, creating a safer environment than a standard crosswalk. The City uses the Bicycle and Trail Crossings Guide to determine when this treatment is appropriate. Currently, the City has over eight PHB signals with several along the Central corridor.
