Nuevo Atrisco Opens Doors to Community and Creativity in West Central
ALBUQUERQUE – Neighbors and visitors in West Central can now enjoy a range of amenities that bring community together, including a teaching kitchen, food park, interactive play areas, and a stage for live performances. Nuevo Atrisco, a mixed-use development on the westside, is the result of a successful public-private partnership between the City and Nuevo Atrisco LLC.
Today, Mayor Tim Keller joined community members and developers to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Nuevo Atrisco Food Park, Community Plaza, and Mural Installation. There will be dozens of public activities at Nuevo Atrisco each year including artisan farmers markets, classes, youth programming, and car shows.
“When we invest in our neighborhoods, we are laying the foundation for a stronger, more vibrant Albuquerque for years to come,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Nuevo Atrisco is a testament to the power of community and collaboration, setting the standard for what’s possible in our city.”
The mural, led by artist Jade Cruz and local youth from Working Classroom, reflects the rich cultural heritage of the West Central area. Keep Albuquerque Beautiful, a program managed by the City’s Solid Waste Department, contributed nearly $30,000 in grant funding to support public art that beautifies the city and educates residents.
“Public art enhances our sense of place and reflects our community values,” said Solid Waste Director Billy Gallegos. “This mural is a testament to the beauty and creativity of Albuquerque, highlighting the talent of local artists while making our city even more welcoming.”
"Our community has been gathering around food and culture in this location for years,” said Madalena Salazar, Working Classroom Executive Director. “We believe public art created by, for, and of the artists, youth, and vendors from this neighborhood will create a sense of belonging while offering amenities to build connections during their experience here."
“This project showcases the power of public-private partnerships,” said Interim MRA Director Terry Brunner. “Nuevo Atrisco has transformed this area, creating a dynamic space for culture, commerce, and community connection. It’s a strong foundation for future growth in West Central Albuquerque.”
“Nuevo Atrisco Food Plaza is a critical piece of the efforts to bring a vibrant food experience to the Westside especially as it brings the Northwest and Southwest mesas at the intersection Central and Unser,” said Chris Baca, President and Chief Executive Officer of YES Housing, Inc. “It will become the go to gathering space for the residents of the area. It also supplements our apartment complex which is right next door.”
Phase 1 of the project included 68 affordable housing units and 12 market rate units built by YES! Development. The City contributed $1.8 million in General Obligation Bonds and land to the project.
