Development of West Central Community and Commercial Plaza Underway
ALBUQUERQUE – Today, Nuevo Atrisco kicked off construction for the development project's next phase. This innovative venture marks a significant milestone for the West Central community, and will create more amenities and opportunities for Albuquerque families in the area.
The Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency (MRA) has reached an agreement to lease 1.6 acres of the site to Nuevo Atrisco, LLC, which is dedicated to creating a vibrant community plaza. Additionally, approximately 1.5 acres, encompassing two parcels fronting Central Avenue, have been allocated for commercial development. This pivotal phase is now underway.
The community plaza phase will focus on the development of a 16,900-square-foot plaza designed to cater to the diverse needs and interests of the community. This inclusive space will feature a host of amenities, including:
- Restrooms
- Teaching kitchen
- Community room
- Interactive play area
- Interactive water feature
- Interior and exterior art installations
- Shade structures
- A stage for community events
Moreover, the community plaza will provide sites for seven micro-restaurants available for lease to the public, fostering culinary diversity and entrepreneurial opportunities within the community.
Simultaneously, the commercial component of the Nuevo Atrisco project will bring with it the development of 10,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, available for lease. This dynamic commercial space will open its doors to businesses aiming to contribute to the area's economic vitality and offer a diverse range of goods and services to residents and visitors.
“We believe in this community, and we envision more things happening,” said Steve Maestas, Nuevo Atrisco LLC. “We develop in all parts of the state and in Texas, and this community is very active, very appreciative, and very engaged in what happens here. It makes our lives much more fruitful when we can have a working partnership with the community.”
“The Nuevo Atrisco development project represents a collective effort to revitalize and empower our community, stimulate economic growth, and provide unique spaces for engagement and cultural expression,” said MRA Director, Terry Brunner. "This project is a testament to our commitment to fostering vibrant communities and supporting local businesses. We are eager to see the positive impact it will have on our city."
City contributions include $1.8M in General Obligation Bonds to the construction of the Public Plaza, and the Retail Property land at no cost to the Developer.
