City Offering Funds to Get Downtown Businesses Connected to RTCC

Community Connect Downtown security camera program aims to reduce crime, improve response times
August 08, 2024

ALBUQUERQUE – The Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency (MRA), in partnership with the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), has launched the Community Connect Downtown Security Camera Grant Program, offering grants to property owners to purchase and place security cameras on commercial buildings in Downtown Albuquerque.

The cameras will be connected to APD’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), providing a vital link to improve crime monitoring and response times. There is $500,000 available through the program, and the City can grant up to $20,000 per property. Properties must be located within the boundaries of the Downtown Metropolitan Redevelopment Area, and applicants may apply for one grant per property. Property owners with multiple properties are able submit separate applications for each property, and may receive up to three individual awards.

"Connecting more downtown properties to the Real Time Crime Center is a one of the ways we’re fighting for a safer downtown,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “We are here to support businesses so that they can focus on helping downtown thrive, while we work to make it a safe, welcoming place for everyone.”

Applications must be submitted online and will be accepted on a rolling basis until funds are depleted. Priority will be given to applicants who plan to install and connect their security cameras within three months of receiving funding, and have a comprehensive safety plan in place.

"The launch of this program marks a significant milestone in our efforts to revitalize Downtown Albuquerque," said MRA Director Terry Brunner." The collaboration between MRA and APD will help deter criminal activity and encourage economic activity.”

There are hundreds of cameras across the city that are linked to the RTCC. Along with live monitoring, APD is also able to review and gather footage to assist in criminal investigations.

"The Real Time Crime Center has proven to be an invaluable resource in our fight against crime," said Chief of Police Harold Medina. "This program will not only deter crime, but also strengthen our ability to monitor incidents and ensure a more effective police response."

Applications for the Community Connect Downtown Security Camera Program are now open and can be submitted through our website at https://www.cabq.gov/mra/community-connect-downtown.
