Mayor Tim Keller Announces James B. Lewis as Senior Advisor for Public Safety
On Sunday, February 25, 2018, Mayor Tim Keller announced a high-level appointment to his leadership team. James B. Lewis joins the administration as Senior Advisor for Public Safety. He will provide civilian oversight to oversee the implementation of the Department of Justice (DOJ) settlement agreement. Completing the reform is an important step as the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) works to implement community policing and tackle the crime epidemic.
Mr. Lewis brings extensive experience in public service, having served in the military police (MP) and in various executive capacities for the City of Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Bernalillo County and the State of New Mexico.
“As a trusted community leader, James is poised to play a critical role as my Senior Advisor for Public Safety,” stated Mayor Keller. “He will bring civilian perspectives to the table as our police department works to implement the DOJ reforms. James will work closely with Deputy Chief Eric Garcia and the DOJ compliance bureau to bring effective community policing to our streets to tackle the crime epidemic.”

James B. Lewis served in federal, state and local government for 38 years, including three terms as State Treasurer and two terms as Bernalillo County Treasurer. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Army Military Police. He also held the position of Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy, overseeing the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity. Mr. Lewis was Chief of Staff to Governor Bruce King. He was also Chief Operating Officer for the City of Albuquerque and City Administrator for Rio Rancho. Mr. Lewis’ educational qualifications include a Masters Degree in Public Administration, a B.S. Degree in Education, and a B.S./A.S. Degree in Business Administration.
