Essential Health, Food Security, and Social Services Endangered as Trump Slashes Continue
Mayor Keller is calling on the Trump administration to reverse the sweeping cuts to public health programs, which will have devastating consequences for families in Albuquerque and across the nation. The administration is decimating the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, cutting $1 billion for local foods programs, and threatening reproductive healthcare funding women and families rely on.
The reckless move to lay off 10,000 health workers, shut down critical agencies, and freeze $120 million in family planning grants will devastate access to essential medical services, from cancer screenings to addiction treatment to infectious disease outbreaks. One in 5 children in New Mexico face hunger, and more than 320,000 people need help getting food.
“As thousands struggle with addiction on our streets, children go hungry, a dangerous measles outbreak—a disease that was once eliminated— is spreading throughout New Mexico, and low-income families cannot access basic reproductive healthcare, these cuts are simply unconscionable,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Trump’s recklessness is putting lives at risk and leaving families without the care they depend on. Albuquerque will not stand by while our community is threatened.”
Health and Human Services is eliminating entire agencies responsible for funding community clinics and mental health programs, as well as gutting the FDA, CDC, and NIH—institutions that have been instrumental in fighting disease and developing life-saving treatments. Additionally, the freeze on Title X funding threatens access to contraception, STI treatment, and maternal health services for millions of low-income families.
Mayor Keller is calling on federal leaders to immediately reverse these cuts and restore funding to critical health programs that serve Albuquerque residents and communities nationwide.
