Calling All Kids! Summer Parks and Rec Programs Filling Up Fast
May 2, 2019
The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department encourages parents and guardians to sign their kids up for fun and engaging summer youth programs offered all across the city. When school lets out this summer, there is a program for every kid in Albuquerque – swim lessons, swim teams, diving lessons, pickleball lessons, tennis lessons, Open Space Explorer Camp, and so much more! The City’s youth programs offer families fun and engaging ways to keep kids safe throughout the summer.
“We are amped up and ready for a fun and exciting summer with Albuquerque’s kids,” stated Dave Simon, Director of Parks and Recreation. “Whether it’s the cool water at our City pools, wildlife study in the shade of the bosque, or action on the tennis court, we’ve got something to engage every kid in Albuquerque. Parents should act fast to secure spots in our great summer programs.”
Aquatics Programs:
City pools offer a variety of fun affordable programs for kids, including swim lessons for kids 6 months to 14 years, diving lessons, kids triathlon classes, junior lifeguard program, and Metro League swim teams. Lesson programs are $35 per session, while Metro League swim team participation is $38.50 for the first child and $27.50 for each additional child. More information, dates, times, and a printable composite schedule for all pools, can be found at www.cabq.gov/aquatics.
Recreation Programs:
Parks & Recreation offers tennis and pickleball lessons at facilities around Albuquerque. Summer tennis lessons will take place at Jerry Cline, Arroyo Del Oso, Ventana Ranch, and Sierra Vista Tennis Courts. In addition to tennis lessons, Junior Match Play and National Junior Tennis League programs are also available. Lessons in pickleball – often referred to as a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and table tennis – will be offered to both kids and adults at the Manzano Mesa Pickleball Complex. Both programs offer 10 lessons over a two-week session for $40.
Open Space Explorer Camp:
Popular Explorer Camp at the Open Space Visitor Center returns for a second year. Each week from June 18 – August 8, kids ages 6 to 12 will learn all about Albuquerque’s amazing natural surroundings. Open Space staff will provide guided instructional and recreational activities, including bosque exploration, helping in the Visitor Center gardens, crafts, games, and so much more. Explorer Camp helps Albuquerque kids gain a better understanding of the environment and our City’s natural surroundings. The camp costs $15 per child per session.
