Internships at the City of Albuquerque

The City of Albuquerque believes that hiring students from high-schools, local colleges, trade schools, and technical schools provides the community with many unique opportunities for employment in public sector jobs, while helping individuals choose public service as a long-term career pathway after completing their training.  The City also believes in providing individuals with disabilities and international students who have been granted permission to work with opportunities to develop a career in public service.

Becoming and intern at the City of Albuquerque is an exciting way to learn, make an income and contribute to public service. While you are in school, you can also work at the city and receive course credit for your work time.

Students can learn skills in construction, IT, office administration, transportation, animal handling, park management, human resources, engineering, and many more

 

There are several different types of internship opportunities at the City of Albuquerque, that are offered by many of the different departments.

 

Short Term Internship

  • Employed during a school term
  • 20 hours per week for 10 weeks
  • Pay rate: $15 per hour for undergraduate students
  • For students attending CNM, UNM or other educational institutions
  • Offered in various departments

Long Term Internship

  • Employed during the year
  • Limited to 2 years
  • 30 hours per week
  • Pay rate: $15 per hour for undergraduate students, $18 per hour for graduates
  • Offered in various departments

Cooperative Education Internship

  • Student works during school term for school credit
  • 5-15 hours per week during school term
  • There is no pay for these positions
  • School grants course credit for hours spent on the job

Externally Funded Internship

  • Student works for City while an external organization pays the salary
  • 5-20 hours per week depending on arrangement
  • Pay for position is covered by external organization
  • May apply to nontraditional students and workers
  • Offered in various departments

 

How to become an Intern

Internship positions are held in each department and managed through the City’s Human Resources Department Recruiting Office.

For all short-term educational internships, the City has relationships with Central New Mexico Community College and the University of New Mexico. Available internship positions will be posted on the student employment website for the college. The City Human Resources Department will work with applicants to place them into available positions within departments at the City.  Students will work for the period of time of the internship, be supervised by a staff member trained as the department intern coordinator, and provided pay and the necessary outcomes required by the college. For long-term internships, City departments may recruit individuals from colleges, trade schools, or the community to work in various positions. These opportunities will also be posted on the college employment website.
