Atkore Fire
Today at approximately 2:38pm Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) and Bernalillo County Fire Rescue (BCFR) responded to a vehicle fire near a commercial business with onsite materials involved.
Upon arrival to the Atkore facility units quickly determined that the fire was spreading aggressively and being wind driven toward additional fuels in the area. A Unified Command Structure was set up almost immediately and additional resources were requested from the greater Albuquerque Metro Area to support this massive 3 Alarm Fire.
While growing in size, due to the heavy amount and type of fuels burning, the fire spread to the vegetative area just east of the of the building and resulted in a simultaneous wildland firefighting operation. All told the fire required over 40 resources and over 90 personnel from the following agencies: New Mexico State Forestry, Corrales Fire Department, Sandoval County Fire Department, Bernalillo Fire Department, Kirtland Air Force Base Fire Department, Albuquerque Fire Rescue, and Bernalillo County Fire Rescue. Traffic Control and Firefighter Operations safety was provided by Albuquerque Police Department.
The primary fuel for the fire was High Density Polyethylene(HDPE) pipes, conduit, and recycling materials that were onsite at the business location. The business was evacuated without incident prior to our arrival and no injuries were reported throughout the event. The cause of this fire is currently under investigation. The fire was deemed under control at 7:48pm and crews will most likely be working throughout the night on extinguishment.
