Wells Park Expansion Temporarily Closes Johnny Tapia Community Center

Johnny Tapia Community Center at Wells Park will temporarily close beginning September 1, 2023. Demolition work is underway to expand Wells Park which affects safe access to the facility. The park expansion adds exciting new sports and recreation amenities for the community.

During the closure, organized pickleball and volleyball will be moved to Barelas Community Center and open gym is available at the other nearby community centers: Barelas, Dennis Chavez, Herman Sanchez, and Los Duranes.

Youth before & after school programming has been diverted to other centers, and an additional PLAY+ site has been added at Longfellow Elementary to ensure that working families in greater downtown continue to be supported during out-of-school time. Parents can register for before & after school programs at play.cabq.gov.

The community center will remain closed for duration of the demolition, with the reopening evaluated based on the sequencing of the park construction project.
