Opportunity Shines at 7th Annual Youth Job & Volunteer Fair
On Saturday, February 1, 750 Albuquerque youth ages 14-25 explored summer jobs and engaged in educational sessions in preparations for what may be, their first job. The City’s One ABQ: Youth Connect held their seventh annual Youth Job & Volunteer fair which hosted 35 city departments and outside organizations who are looking for motivated young staff to fill summer and year-round job opportunities.
“It is encouraging to see so many young people who are eager to work for their city and experience an impactful summer job.” said Mayor Tim Keller. “They’ll be making a direct impact on their communities while building a meaningful foundation for their futures.”
Almost 450 of those young people experienced breakout sessions throughout the day to attendees on public speaking, interviewing, professionalism and how to connect with employers after the job fair. The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions was on site offering career exploration and resume building and Rio Grande Credit Union offered Financial Empowerment. Other collaborating and hiring departments include Parks & Recreation, Senior Affairs, Albuquerque Community Safety, Solid Waste, the Office of Civic Engagement and more.
“I’ve been with the City now for 3 years and today I enjoyed talking to everyone and helping them find a job they like.” said youth employee Jude Maldonado. “I love working here, you grow into a person that you never imagined you could become.”
The City of Albuquerque continues to be one of the largest employers of young people in the state, and expanding youth opportunities is a priority for the Keller administration.
