Site Description

The Old River Landfill is located on the east side of the Rio Grande River.  It is accessed from Second Street and is south of the Barelas Ball fields at the access to the Bosque Trail.  The landfill was operated by the City of Albuquerque from the 1920’s to the 1940’s.  The waste volume is unknown but the area is approximately 20 acres.

Landfill gas has not been measured at this landfill and the City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department does not monitor landfill gas at this site.

Five groundwater monitoring wells have been installed at the site and the southernmost well was damaged and plugged in 2013.  Annual analytical results from the remaining monitoring wells show no contamination.

No buffer zone has been established for this landfill given its age and all decomposable material has degraded.

Current Status

  • Conduct annual landfill gas monitoring and inspection.
