Sandia High School Area Safety and Traffic Calming Measures

Anticipated Completion 2025

Photo of Claremont Ave near Sandia High School

Background

Councilor Fiebelkorn received numerous requests from residents in this area to address unsafe road conditions for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. In April 2023, the Councilor initiated a public process to determine appropriate ways to calm traffic in the vicinity of Sandia High School. The area involved in the study included the boundaries of Claremont Ave to Comanche Rd, Aztec Rd to Wisconsin St. Public meetings allowed the project team to share an overview of the corridor's safety challenges and provide a forum for the community's feedback on these issues and potential solutions.

The study concluded that the community would benefit from calming measures and Councilor Fiebelkorn was able to secure funding to complete this construction. The project is currently in design at 90% and completion is anticipated in 2025.

Project Funding

Capital outlay funds for the construction phase of this project were provided by Representative Elizabeth “Liz” Thomson and Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto.
