Tree and Understory Giveaways

Completed 2024

Councilor Fiebelkorn has sponsored TreeNM and ABQ NeighborWoods in tree plantings and giveaway trees every year since coming into office. Since then, nearly 800 sponsored trees have been planted in District 7!  She is the first Councilor to sponsor two plantings per year and the first Councilor to sponsor an Understory Planting.

NeighborWoods projects include assistance for residents with selecting, planting, and maintaining up to 100 street trees along street fronts in their neighborhood. Trees and the tree understory play a vital role in climate resilience. A robust tree canopy not only improves beauty in the neighborhood, they help reduce air pollution, stormwater impacts, heat island reduction, and they provide an ecosystem for some of our non-human neighbors!

The first Albuquerque understory study was planted in Wade Circle Park in the Mesa Village neighborhood. The understory refers to the plants and shrubs that grow beneath tree coverage. Research has shown that trees and understories work together to communicate, retain moisture, and process carbon.

The neighborhoods first are evaluated for current tree coverage and socioeconomic status. During the tree giveaway, residents chose the tree species they preferred from a list of available, climate-ready, and drought-tolerant trees. Neighbors were provided information on watering and care, as well as given contact information if any future support and care. Tree have been planted through this program in McKinley, Hodgin, Summit Park, McDuffie-Twin Parks, Mark Twain, Alvarado Park, Mesa Village, Bel-Air neighborhood. More plans are scheduled for the summer of 2025.
