City Council voted unanimously to designate historic Fairview Cemetery as a City Landmark.

The ordinance’s sponsor, District 6 City Councilor Nichole Rogers, issued the following statement:

"Preserving our city's history is vital to understanding who we are and where we came from," said District 6 City Councilor Nichole Rogers. "The Historic Fairview Cemetery is more than just a place of rest; it's a testament to Albuquerque's rich heritage and is especially important to the Black community. We have historic figures like the Buffalo Soldiers and 1st Sgt. James L. Morris, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient from August 1875, all laid to rest at this site. With the City Council designating Fairview as a City Landmark, we honor the lives of those who have gone before us and ensure that this important piece of our city's story remains protected for generations to come."
