Albuquerque – District 5 City Councilor Dan Lewis’ efforts to improve traffic to and from Albuquerque’s Westside were rewarded when the Council approved the City’s Capital Improvement  Program budget at the City Council meeting on April 7, 2025. The bill, R-25-117 will be presented to voters in the City’s November election.

"This is a major step forward for the Westside," stated Councilor Dan Lewis. "The expansion of McMahon Boulevard is essential for improving traffic flow, enhancing safety, and supporting the continued growth of our community. For years, residents have expressed frustration with the congestion, and this funding will directly address those concerns."

Councilor Lewis secured $4 million in funding to complete the buildout of McMahon Boulevard, the City’s principle east-west arterial serving the Far Northwest Mesa.

The expansion of McMahon Boulevard will:

  • Reduce Commute Times: By increasing roadway capacity, the project will alleviate congestion and shorten travel times for Westside residents.
  • Enhance Public Safety: The four-lane cross-section will provide safer travel conditions, reducing the risk of accidents.
  • Support Economic Development: Improved infrastructure is crucial for attracting businesses and fostering economic growth in the Far Northwest Mesa.
  • Accommodate Future Growth: The Westside is one of Albuquerque’s fastest-growing areas, and this expansion will ensure the roadway can handle increased traffic volumes.

The Capital Improvement Program, which includes the McMahon Boulevard project, reflects the City's commitment to investing in infrastructure that benefits all Albuquerque residents. The City encourages residents to learn more about the program and exercise their right to vote in the November election.
