Councilor Dan Lewis and Councilor Joaquín Baca celebrate Major Investments for Bob Gerding Pond in Council’s Approved Capital Improvement Budget
Albuquerque – Albuquerque District 5 City Councilor Dan Lewis and Councilor Joaquín Baca celebrated the Albuquerque City Council’s passage of the Capital Improvement Budget, R-25-117 which includes significant funding for critical improvements Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond at Tingley Beach. The approved budget allocates substantial resources to enhance water quality, accessibility, and overall visitor experience at this beloved recreational area.
"The Bob Gerding Pond is a vital community asset, and our investments demonstrate our commitment to preserving and enhancing this natural treasure for all Albuquerque residents and visitors," said Councilor Lewis. "The approved funding will address long-standing issues, improve water quality, and provide essential amenities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. I am grateful to T.J. Trout with KKOB for encouraging proper use of the pond and helping raise awareness of its need for rehabilitation and restoration."
The approved budget includes the following key investments:
Enhanced Water Quality Management:
$79,170 for the purchase and installation of six (6) OWS NightAir III Battery Back Up Solar Aerators to combat algae growth.
Approximately $300,000 for comprehensive water quality rehabilitation focusing on circulation and parameter control.
$13,776 for Cattail Control
$110,000 for the purchase of a Weedoo, Model TC-3012 Workboat, for ongoing water management.
Improved Amenities and Accessibility:
Approximately $400,000 for the construction of two (2) new vault toilets, enhancing visitor convenience.
$45,000 for the installation of a concrete apron at the southern Tingley vehicle entrance/exit access point improving access.
Increased Staffing:
$79,183.11 in annual recurring costs to support new staff
"These investments will significantly enhance the ecological health of the pond, improve visitor comfort, and ensure that this recreational area remains a source of pride for our community," Councilor Joaquín Baca added. “It is our responsibility to preserve this asset for future generations.”
