Rainbow Blvd Traffic Calming and Pedestrian Safety Study
Background
The City is conducting a traffic calming and pedestrian safety study for Rainbow Boulevard from Paseo del Norte to the southern property line of Volcano Vista High School. Residents of the neighborhoods adjacent to Rainbow Blvd have reported consistent speeding on the corridor. Students at Tony Hillerman Middle School, Tierra Antigua Elementary School, and Volcano Vista High School walk along Rainbow Blvd and often cross mid-block or at locations without marked crosswalks. Curves in the roadway contribute to concerns about reduced visibility and increased risks to pedestrians crossing the street.
The study will consider a variety of alternatives, including but not limited to:
- Improved pedestrian crossings around/near the schools;
- Locating barriers to prohibit crossings, especially near intersections;
- Assessing road diet options to reconfigure the roadway striping for the purpose of enhancing pedestrian safety, including narrowing lane widths or repurposing existing through lanes as striped buffers, turn lanes, or queueing/parking lanes for drop-off/pick-up;
- Additional pedestrian amenities such as signalized crossings, enhanced pedestrian crossings, pedestrian refuges, and bump-outs;
- Identifying potential additional crossings at unmarked crossing locations where there are frequent pedestrian crossings or as alternatives to existing crossings at intersections.
