APD Lowrider Mural Art Contest Winner is Kaylyn Flores
Today, City Council President Klarissa Peña and the Albuquerque Police Department’s Southwest Area Command’s PRT went for a cruise on Albuquerque’s westside to announce Kaylyn Flores as the winner of the APD Lowrider Mural Art Contest. Nusenda Credit Union presented Kaylyn Flores with a $5,000 scholarship for winning the contest.
Kaylyn Flores’ design is representative of Albuquerque and features the Sandia Mountains, hot air balloons, a chile ristra, an APD Badge, Route 66, a row of luminarias, and a sunset with the Zia symbol.
The announcement of Kaylyn Flores as the contest winner was preceded by a cruise along Coors Blvd. that featured the lowrider that the APD PRT is currently building with the Cruising Leadership Youth Program. The APD lowrider just had hydraulics installed and the rebuild will continue during the next few months with the unveiling being at the Albuquerque Isotopes Lowrider Night on June 20, 2020.
“Cruising culture brings community together and it did again tonight,” said Councilor Peña. “I’m excited and honored to work the Southwest Area Command and Nusenda on this project to highlight our youth and their talent, like Kaylyn Flores and the rest of the Leadership Youth Program.”
“One of the most rewarding outcomes of this project is the involvement in youth in the design of our lowrider,” said Commander Timothy Espinosa. “We appreciate all of the students who participated, and we hope this signals a long-term, positive relationship between APD and the young people throughout Albuquerque.”
The Southwest Area Command’s PRT community-based policing model has included partnering with local schools, neighborhoods, and businesses to help engage the community in building ties with law enforcement. The PRT Cruising Leadership Youth Program was launched in August 2019 and received 29 entries for the Mural Art Contest.
