Constructive Conversations: Metro Homelessness Initiative
Addressing Homelessness in Albuquerque
The City of Albuquerque is committed to combating homelessness through innovative programs and community-driven solutions. Led by Mayor Tim Keller, the Metro Homelessness Initiative (MHI) focuses on expanding housing options, enhancing mental health and substance abuse services, and providing comprehensive support systems for individuals in need.
Key programs include the 24/7 Albuquerque Community Safety Department, the Gateway network offering shelter and recovery services, and the creation of nearly 2,500 housing units, half of which are designated as affordable. Through these efforts, the City invests over $57 million annually to serve approximately 40,000 individuals.
Inaugural Constructive Conversations
Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller and City Councilors met for “Constructive Conversations” in spring of 2024. The meetings sought to bridge the gap between community aspirations and funding realities.
The series featured nine sessions exploring planned development in each Council district across Albuquerque. There was significant attendance and interaction between community members and Mayor Keller, City Councilors and City Department leaders including Planning, Parks and Recreation, Municipal Development, Community Safety and more. More than 1,100 people registered for the Conversations which took place in all nine City Council Districts.
The final 2024 report summarizes key facts related to the Constructive Conversations as well as feedback received on community hopes and needs.
