Description

The purpose of the Albuquerque Chinese American Film Festival is to bridge cultures, foster understanding, combat racial stereotypes and celebrate the diverse and rich tapestry of stories within the Chinese American community. Many of us who grew up as Chinese Americans suffered through discrimination that was perpetuated in part by Hollywood's negative or comedic portrayals of Chinese in movies or television. In 2016, a group of members from the Albuquerque chapter of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance organized our first film festival to combat those stereotypes. The Albuquerque Chinese American film festival strives to select films that highlight the complexities, joys and challenges of the Chinese American experience. Through the beauty of storytelling, we hope to entertain, but also enlighten and provide a platform for collaboration, education, understanding and mutual respect among individuals from all walks of life. This year's theme focuses on films that demonstrate the hope and courage Chinese Americans have exhibited in the face of racism and discrimination. The Afternoon Session will consists of a film about the True Story of Ming Wang, followed by a Panel Discussion about this year’s theme of Hope and Courage.
