The Public Art Urban Enhancement Division (PAUED) seeks existing 2D and 3D works of art for a Juneteenth exhibition at Gallery One’s Satellite Pop Up Space, on the 8th Floor of Albuquerque City Hall. The exhibit and subsequent acquisition of exceptional art by African American artists enhances the strength of our community while embracing a transparent process that reflects the diversity and interests of Albuquerque.
LOCATION/CONTEXT: The exhibit, which runs June 12 - July 18, 2025 will be curated and displayed at the PAUED Satellite Gallery, in the 8th Floor lobby of City Hall. The juried works will be reviewed by an Art Selection Committee to determine if any of the works will become part of the City of Albuquerque’s permanent collection.
PROJECT INTENT/THEME: The Art Selection Committee seeks New Mexican artists who can produce artwork suitable for the Public Art Urban Enhancement Division’s Juneteenth Pop Up Exhibition that examines the question of erasure or invisibility, based on Ralph Ellison’s award-winning novel “Invisible Man”. Written in 1952 and still relevant today, it explores the psychological and social effects of racism on a nameless Black man in 20th century America.
This Juneteenth exhibit recognizes the contributions of African American New Mexican artists who have ‘lived experience’ in their work; creates more inclusive programming in an underserved community that represents less than 3 percent of the state’s population – half who reside in the City of Albuquerque.
SITE: The site for this project is the planned lobby space on the 8th Floor of Albuquerque City Hall which serves as a PAUED Satellite Gallery. 2D works should be no larger than 25” W x 35” H; 3D works should be no larger than 2’ x 2’ or not to exceed the dimensions of the available pedestal area. All 2D artwork must be ready to hang on the walls with floreat style picture hanger nails. There will be limited security during this two-week pop-up exhibit. Artists must sign a temporary loan agreement to display their work.
MEDIA/STYLE: Media may include, but is not limited to, paint, mosaic, metal, vinyl, wood, glass, natural/organic materials or a combination of materials suitable for indoor display.
PROJECT FUNDS: Submissions will be reviewed by an Art Selection Committee for suggested acquisitions by the City’s Arts Board, who will in turn recommend acquisitions or purchases of existing work for the City of Albuquerque’s Public Art Collection.
APPLICATION PROCESS: This is a statewide, open invitation for all artists residing in New Mexico. Proof of residency may be required. The Art Selection Committee will jury and recommend selections to the full Arts Board.
Artists must submit the following items for the project:
- A statement or description of the existing art work(s). Not to exceed 500 words.
- A current resume including statements regarding your artwork/art education and past work, etc. Not to exceed 500 words.
- Images of up to two (2) existing works of art for consideration. The submissions may include existing 2D works ready for installation, one or more sculptures, or a combination of both. All works submitted must be ready to hang on floreat-style wall hangers for the duration of the exhibit. Artworks not ready for display will be returned.
- An image key, clearly labeled with your full name and a numerical listing for each image, the title of the work, the media, dimensions, and year of completion and purchase cost of the work.
All of the images and materials should be submitted in digital format using the application: https://coacommunityevents.wufoo.com/forms/call-for-artists-juneteenth-exhibition/
SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA: The Art Selection Committee will score applications based on the selection criteria listed, through a fair and open competition.
The selection criteria shall include, but is not limited to:
- The artists’ connection to New Mexico and/or the Albuquerque community;
- Their knowledge of the history of Africans and African Americans in New Mexico or Albuquerque;
- Artists’ familiarity with African and African American culture;
- The professional qualifications of the artist demonstrated by the supporting materials;
- Demonstrated artistic quality (use of media, unique vision, quality of craftsmanship).
ELIGIBILITY: Legal residents of New Mexico are eligible to submit.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: The application, images and other required materials must be submitted electronically by 3:59 pm on Monday, June 2nd, 2025.
