Unveiling the Artistry: Dive into the Creation of Albuquerque's International District Library Glass Installation
It’s an international glass installation project in the making and you’re invited. Take a behind the scenes look at the Department of Arts & Culture’s latest public art project – a glass fabrication for the International District Library, featuring local artist Reyes Padilla and world-famous glass designers Franz Mayer of Munich.
For more than 175 years, the Mayer Studio has been considered one of the leaders in the field of architectural glass, glass mosaic, and glass painting and has produced artwork with such unique quality that today “Munich Style” and “Mayer Style” are synonymous. Legendary artists such as Nick Cave, Ellsworth Kelly, and Kiki Smith have worked on glass tile installations with the Germany-based company.
Albuquerque artist Reyes Padilla, recognized for his work in Synesthesia art was selected as the commissioned artist for the International District Library glass installation which included an intensive two-week workshop learning fabrication – Mayer Style.
Designers, architects, and artists are invited to hear from Erica Behrens, director of Mayer’s New York Office, who will present and discuss Mayer’s projects worldwide and explain the variety of techniques and unique collaborative approach this studio offers.
Padilla will join her in a community discussion of his recent visit to Mayer of Munich and his initial collaboration with the Mayer studio. The artist will present a visual story of his personal experience with the fabrication studio and will look for input on how to fuse the spirit of Albuquerque and the International District into this major public commission designed for the library.
