With a distinguished career in library leadership, Alderete brings extensive experience in public service, community engagement, and library advocacy.

Most recently serving as Deputy State Librarian for New Mexico, Alderete oversaw a range of statewide library services, including the bookmobile program, books-by-mail for rural and homebound residents, and a public library delivery network connecting more than 140 libraries across the state. Prior to that, she was the Library Director for the Taos Public Library, where she strengthened community partnerships and enhanced library programming.

"Albuquerque's libraries are the heart of our community's story,” said Alderete. “I'm honored to join the Department of Arts & Culture and contribute to writing its next chapter as Library Director."

Her background includes roles at the United World College of the American West and the Colorado Talking Book Library, demonstrating her commitment to accessibility and lifelong learning. She holds a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Denver and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Prince Edward Island.

A passionate advocate for libraries, Alderete has served on multiple American Library Association committees, including the Rural, Native, and Tribal Library Committee and the Committee on Legislation. She also led the New Mexico Library Association as its President from 2022 to 2023.

“Kate’s proven leadership and dedication to accessibility of information will help shape our library system and see that it meets the evolving needs of our community,” said Arts & Culture Director Dr. Shelle Sanchez. “We are excited to see how her vision and expertise will inspire innovation and enhanced access to resources.”

“Kate Alderete brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to community-centered service,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Her leadership will help ensure that our libraries continue to be vibrant, inclusive spaces where people of all ages can learn and connect.”

Beyond her professional achievements, Alderete is an avid mountain enthusiast, a devoted mother, and a lifelong champion of literacy and intellectual freedom. She looks forward to leading the library system into its next chapter, ensuring it remains a vibrant and inclusive space for all.
