Job Opportunity at the ABQ BioPark: Associate Project Coordinator I (Marketing)
The successful candidate will be a skillful writer/copy editor and enjoy assisting in a variety of tasks to help the communications team tell the stories of the ABQ BioPark and ensure guests have a great visit to our facilities. A strong commitment to conservation and understanding of animal well-being is paramount. This position reports to the Marketing Coordinator and is part of the Guest Experience department.
The ABQ BioPark consists of the Zoo, Aquarium and Botanic Garden, and Tingley Beach.
This position is employed through a staffing agency, not the City of Albuquerque, and is located at the ABQ BioPark. This full time position is limited to a two-year term with an option to renew after a 90-day furlough.
The Communication Specialist’s duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in the research, planning, interviewing, writing, and copy editing of content for social media posts, press releases, news items, promotional copy, website, events, and exhibit interpretation.
- Assist in the coordination and tracking of projects; including graphics, marketing, communications, and events.
- Coordinate materials to various locations within the ABQ BioPark as well as track project progress.
- Coordinate internal communication initiatives.
- Collect and track materials used in projects.
- Assist with photography and videography needs.
- Frequently walk the facilities and document project progress.
- Help provide content for and distribute physical and digital internal and external communications.
- Assist in the execution of the BioPark’s social media presence; including possibly researching stories, interviewing area experts, writing, acquiring photo and/or video assets, posting stories and tracking performance.
- Assist with photo and video b-roll collection; including photo and video editing, and organizing assets with keywords.
- Help monitor and respond to social media comments and direct messages.
- Assist with press conference logistics, set up and tear down
- Provide production assistance during photo/video shoots.
- Assist with providing TV & print media journalists information to positively cover BioPark stories
A Successful Communication Specialist will:
- Have exceptional written, copy editing, and verbal communication skills.
- Be extremely organized and comfortable with light database updating and configuring.
- Have a friendly and open personality and enjoy working with a diverse cross section of individuals from a variety of departments at all levels of government and job positions.
- Be familiar with modern social media platforms and best practices.
- Have a basic understanding of good photographic techniques.
- Be motivated to seek out and share conservation stories.
- Be familiar with Associated Press style guidelines
- Be familiar with basic graphic design principles.
- Be comfortable working outdoors for short periods of time in variable weather conditions.
- Familiarize and remain current on Association of Zoo and Aquarium (AZA) communication best practices.
- Bi-lingual in English and Spanish is a plus, but not required.
Preferred qualifications
Applicants must be 18 years or older. Minimum high school diploma, college degree in communications or journalism related fields preferred.
Must be physically able to lift or move up to 30 pounds (stanchions, photo/video equipment).
Work environment is mostly office, but walking the grounds frequently is necessary for project tracking. Candidates must pass a security background check to be hired.
Work schedule:
Full time, 40 hours per week. Most work will generally be between Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Occasional short periods of weekend, holiday, and evening work may be required.
Pay rate:
$19.75 per hour. This position is employed through a staffing agency, not the City of Albuquerque. The work location is located at the ABQ BioPark. This full time position is limited to a two-year term with an option to renew after a 90-day furlough.
