Celebrate Sea Turtle Awareness Day with Mimi the rescued sea turtle
ABQ BioPark continues the Aquarium and Botanic Garden’s 25th anniversary celebration with special offers and experiences.
The ABQ BioPark Aquarium invites you to join us from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, for Sea Turtle Awareness Day. Learn all about sea turtles and what you can do to help them prosper in our shared oceans for generations to come. The Aquarium is home to two sea turtles; Jimmy the hawksbill sea turtle and Mimi the loggerhead sea turtle.
“Mimi is a rescue animal that we estimate to be at least 50 years old,” said Fred Whiteman-Jennings, ABQ BioPark Education Facilitator. “She has been with us for 25 years at the Aquarium and is a testament to the amazing animal care the Aquarium offers to all of the sea creatures here.”
This year’s Sea Turtle Awareness Day is particularly special as the ABQ BioPark Aquarium and Botanic Garden are celebrating 25 years serving the community. This year-long celebration includes specials and unique experiences every month throughout 2022. BioPark staff will offer special sea turtle crafts and education stations including:
- Storytime at 11:00 a.m. outside on the otter deck.
- Aquarist talks at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
- Sea Turtle Diet discovery station.
- Sea Turtles and Plastics discovery station.
Materials will also be provided for a take-home craft, and you can stay after the event to watch the care team’s dive at 2:15 p.m.
In addition, the Shark Reef cafe will be offering a 25% discount on all food items on January 22.
Even though the ABQ BioPark Aquarium is located in the high desert of the Southwest, we play a large role in aquatic conservation. Recent contributions include growing and distributing endangered coral species, fostering young rescue sea turtles, and contributing to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) funds to assist sea turtles when they are threatened by extreme weather caused by climate change.
