Animal Updates at the Zoo

Learn about new babies, exhibits and departures since March.

August 6, 2020 - A lot has happened at the ABQ BioPark Zoo since the facility closed its doors in mid-March. Everyone is excited to welcome visitors again August 12. Here's an update on what's changed in our animal family.

New Zoo Babies

The Zoo welcomed two hyena babies in May. This is the second pair of hyena cubs for parents Smilla and Dubu.

In June, Mexican gray wolves Kawi and Ryder welcomed seven pups! This is the pair's second litter.

Reptiles also welcomed 21 Krefft’s River turtles and three snake-necked turtles.

New Exhibits

The Zoo is happy to announce the grand opening of its Birds of the Islands exhibit and the re-imagined Raptor Roost exhibit. Both are located along the Tropical Trail.

Birds of the Islands features a number of avian species that live on the world's islands, including the Socorro dove and Guam kingfisher, two endangered species that the ABQ BioPark breeds to boost worldwide populations. The exhibit also features educational material about the unique challenges facing island birds.

Raptor Roost, an old favorite full of raptors like eagles, owls and vultures, received a facelift including new signs and revamped habitats.
