The ABQ BioPark is delighted to announce that Albert, a 26-year-old Asian elephant, has successfully completed his tuberculosis (TB) treatment. This achievement is a significant victory in veterinary healthcare and highlights the intricate challenges of treating such a formidable disease in large animals like elephants.

Albert was diagnosed with TB in June 2023 as part of the BioPark’s routine health screenings, which are integral to our comprehensive animal care program. Following his diagnosis, a carefully crafted treatment protocol was put into action, adhering to the highest standards of veterinary care.

"Albert’s successful recovery from tuberculosis is a testament to the deep trust and cooperation he shares with his care team," said Calli Hamlin, assistant curator of elephants at the ABQ BioPark. "This outcome was possible because of our proactive health measures, including regular screenings of the entire herd."

Throughout his treatment Albert showed no symptoms of illness, underscoring the effectiveness of our preventive care strategies and early detection. No other elephants tested positive for the disease.

Treating TB in elephants requires a lengthy process, typically spanning 12 to 18 months, due to their large size and slow metabolism. This affects how medications are absorbed and processed. Tuberculosis bacteria are known for their resilience, necessitating a prolonged and potent antibiotic regimen to ensure complete eradication from the system.

The BioPark prioritizes the health and safety of all our animals, implementing rigorous health protocols to ensure our herd survives and thrives. We remain committed to providing the highest standard of care and sharing this success to advance the field of animal health management globally.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated team and the supportive community for their commitment to the wellbeing of all our residents at the BioPark.
