ABQ BioPark temporarily shifting many birds indoors to protect from Avian Flu

No cases have been found at the BioPark
March 07, 2025

The ABQ BioPark is temporarily moving many of its birds indoors as a precautionary measure against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which has been detected in the wild bird population in Bernalillo County. Although no cases have been found at the BioPark, the decision to bring certain species indoors has been made to minimize any potential exposure.

The ABQ BioPark has contingency plans in place to protect the birds in their care during active bird flu outbreaks, and has implemented the current measures as planned.

Birds will be back outdoors once covers have been installed over their habitats.

The avian influenza virus is carried by wild birds and can spread easily, posing a significant risk to some species. While all birds are at risk, certain species are particularly vulnerable. The BioPark is working to ensure that these birds are protected while continuing to provide them with a comfortable and secure environment.

Any bird that is found deceased at the BioPark will be tested for HPAI. The bird team will bring in the remaining birds if deemed necessary. While it is rare for humans to contract avian influenza, the BioPark advises the public not to handle dead or sick birds, especially in areas where HPAI has been confirmed.
