Description
Start your zoo visit at Flamingo Island and join us as we celebrate flashy flamingos around the globe!
International Flamingo Day started in 2020, when a group of flamingo experts and scientists dedicated to flamingo conservation with the IUCN founded an international day to bring awareness about all species of flamingo and the challenges they face. The ABQ BioPark is home to a "flamboyance" of American flamingos (also called Caribbean flamingo, scientific name Phoenicopterus ruber), but did you know there are 5 other species? The Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis), Andean flamingo (Phoenicoparrus andinus), and the puna or James's flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi) are also distributed throughout the Americas like Phoenicopterus ruber; while the greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) and the lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) are native to Afro-Eurasia.
Explore Discovery Stations and hands-on activities with our education team and volunteers to learn about the natural history of flamingos and conservation efforts, as well as flamingo story time and more!
