On September 17, 1783, duck 🦆, a sheep 🐑, and a rooster 🐓 took flight! They were the first living passengers in a hot air balloon. The balloon, called, 'Le Reveillon' was built by the Montgolfier Brothers (who would go on to be known for a lot more than just this livestock flight)!
The sheep, duck, and rooster were hailed as 'heroes of the air' and, as a reward, were given a place in the Menagerie in Versailles by Louis XVI.

The part of the aircraft that looks like a balloon is actually called an envelope. The fabric in the envelope is rip-resistant, fire-resistant nylon, similar to the material used in the backpacks or lightweight tents carried by hikers and mountaineers. Some hot air balloon envelopes are many different colors, some are all one color, and some have a large central image.
What will your envelope look like?

The roadrunner is the New Mexico State Bird. It is a slender fast-running bird of the cuckoo family. Just like in cartoons, roadrunners love to run and can reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour. They can fly for short distances but prefer to remain on the ground where they hunt for prey. These birds are adapted to all kinds of weather. The roadrunner here is experiencing New Mexico's cold winter season.
